You're not just sitting there

I used to think I was “just relaxing,” or if I’m being honest, “just wasting time.”
On the couch. Watching a show. Maybe scrolling a little.
Nothing intense. Nothing demanding. Nothing that should leave me feeling… oddly tired afterward.
And yet—
There it was.
The tight shoulders.
The clenched jaw.
The subtle forward lean like I was about to personally intervene in the plot.
What’s Really Happening
Fun fact:
Your body doesn’t know the difference between watching something intense…and being in something intense.
When you’re:
watching a suspenseful scene
playing a fast-paced video game
even reading something emotionally charged
Your nervous system responds like:
“This matters. Stay alert.”
This is where things get interesting (and a little humbling).
Your brain and body are constantly communicating through your nervous system.
Alert posture (leaning forward, tensing up)→ signals: pay attention, something’s happening
Relaxed posture (open chest, steady breath)→ signals: you’re safe, you can settle
Meaning:
Your body isn’t just reacting to the experience…it’s shaping it.
Why You Lean In Without Noticing
When something gets intense, your body naturally moves into:
shoulders rounding forward
core tightening
hands gripping
breath shortening
It's called flexion + tension—a protective, focused state.
It’s the same pattern your body would use if something actually required quick reaction.
And your brain responds accordingly:
Increased attention
Heightened emotional response
Faster processing
You feel more in it.
Which is great… until it’s not.
Because even though you weren’t moving much…
Your body was:
holding low-grade tension
staying in a mild “alert” state
breathing more shallowly than usual
For an extended period of time.
Translation:
You weren’t resting.
You were bracing.
We don’t just spend time—we spend our nervous system.
Most of us assume:
Experience → body reacts
But the truth is:
Body → shapes the experience
Example:
Curled in, tense, gripping→ everything feels more intense
Open, relaxed, breathing steadily→ same experience feels more manageable
Same show. Same game. Same body.
Completely different experience.
And—good news—you don’t need to:
stop watching
stop playing
stop relaxing
You just need to:
Notice how you’re holding yourself while you do it.
Try this (like, right now):
Unclench your jaw
Drop your shoulders
Lean back instead of forward
Take one slow, full breath
And then…
Notice what changes.
Why This Matters (Beyond the Couch)
This isn’t about gaming or TV.
This is about:
how you sit at work
how you scroll your phone
how you move through your day
Because what looks like “just sitting” is often:
a full-body neurological event with emotional consequences.
The MoveMaker Truth
You don’t have to overhaul your life to feel better.
You probably don’t need:
more time
a new routine
a perfect plan
You probably need:
more awareness of what your body is already doing.
So next time you’re on the couch, mid-episode, fully invested…
Pause for a second.
Notice:
your shoulders
your breath
your hands
And ask yourself:
Am I actually resting… or am I bracing?
Because once you see it—
You can change it.
And when you change it…
You change how you experience your life.
Move Like It Matters.
