Veggie Chips vs. Potato Chips: Does “Better” Always Mean Best?

Sometimes I find myself standing in the snack aisle with a craving. The shelves are lined with familiar blue bags—and I'm torn between potato chips (ripple-cut, obviously) and a sea salt veggie variety.

One promises nostalgia and crunch. The other whispers, “I’m the healthier choice.”

But is it really?

The Fine Print on “Healthier”

Take these two bags from Meijer. The veggie chips—made with potato, spinach, and tomato powders—sound like a garden party in a bag. The ripple chips, on the other hand, are unapologetically potato through and through.

Nutritionally? They’re not worlds apart. The veggie chips clock in at 140 calories a serving, the ripple chips at 150. Sodium, fat, carbs—they’re different, but not drastically. So, does “veggie” automatically equal “better”? Not always.

The Truth About “Better” Choices

Our brains love the idea of a health halo. If it says veggie, we feel like we’re doing our bodies a favor. But unless we’re swapping chips for actual vegetables, it’s still a processed snack.

That doesn’t make it bad—it just makes it honest. Sometimes the slightly better choice (a few less calories, less sodium, or a brand made with better oils) can add up over time. Think of it as compounding interest for your health.

So, What Should You Choose?

  • If your goal is pure enjoyment, grab the chips you love and savor them.

  • If your goal is to shave off small edges where you can, choosing veggie chips (or baked versions, or smaller portion packs) may be worth it.

  • If your goal is nutrient density, chips of any kind won’t get you there—fruits, veggies, nuts, and other whole foods will.

The Bigger Lesson

The real win isn’t in choosing veggie chips over potato chips. It’s in practicing awareness—pausing to ask, “Why am I making this choice?” Sometimes the answer is comfort. Sometimes it’s energy. Sometimes it’s, “Because I just want to.” All valid.

And here’s the MoveMaker takeaway: searching for “healthier” doesn’t mean we have to find perfect. Every time we make a choice that nudges us closer to our goals—even if it’s small—it matters.

Because over time, those little shifts add up.

And sometimes, that’s the crunch we really need.

“Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” – The Police. A reminder that even the little things—like swapping chips—can feel powerful.

🥗 Mindful Snack

The “Half & Half Bowl”: a handful of ripple chips plus a handful of cut-up bell peppers with hummus. Crunch, salt, and fiber—balanced.

🏃 Movement

The Pantry Pause Stretch

1️⃣ Stand with feet hip-width apart in front of your snack cabinet.

2️⃣ Reach both arms overhead for a big inhale.

3️⃣ Exhale, hinge forward, and let arms dangle toward the floor.

4️⃣ Hold 3 breaths, roll up slowly, and then grab your snack.

🧠 Mind-Bender

What if “healthy” wasn’t about eliminating the fun stuff—but about layering in enough good stuff that the fun has room to fit?
