Emotional Miasma

There are moments when nothing is technically wrong…
…but something feels off.
And yet the room feels heavy.
You feel it in your shoulders. In your breath. In the way people are moving just a little differently than usual.
That’s what I’ve started calling emotional miasma.
Not dramatic. Not explosive.
Just… lingering.
The Invisible Thing That Changes Everything
A long time ago, before science caught up, people believed illness was caused by bad air.
They called it miasma.
They didn’t understand bacteria yet, but they knew something important:
Environment matters.
And while we’ve come a long way in understanding physical health, I’m not sure we’ve fully caught up when it comes to emotional environments.
Because emotional miasma is real.
It shows up as:
unspoken tension
quiet competition
low-level stress
ego creeping in
people protecting instead of connecting
No one names it.
But everyone adjusts to it.
People hold back.People overcompensate.People shut down.
And suddenly, the same room with the same people feels completely different.
Why You Can’t Think Your Way Out of It
Here’s where most of us get stuck.
We try to logic our way through an emotional problem.
We tell ourselves:
“It’s fine.”“Just focus.”“Don’t let it bother you.”
But your nervous system doesn’t care about your pep talk.
It responds to conditions, not commands.
Which means if the environment feels tense, your body will act tense—whether you like it or not. That’s not a mindset problem. That’s an environment problem.
The MoveMaker Shift
At MoveMaker, we don’t start by trying to fix people.
We start by changing the room.
Because when you change the environment, you change what’s possible inside of it.
This is where the MoveMaker levers come in:
Movement changes the body
Music changes the energy
Mindbenders change perspective
Munchies support the system
Mood (things like lighting, scent, tone) shapes the atmosphere
You don’t argue with miasma.
You clear the air.
And the wild part?
When the environment shifts, people shift with it.
Without being told to.
The Moment It Clicks
I see this all the time at the studio. If you’ve ever walked into a class feeling off and walked out feeling like a completely different human…
You’ve experienced this too.
Not because someone lectured you.
But because something changed.
Your body moved. The music hit differently. You laughed. You connected.
And somewhere in there, the heaviness lifted.
That’s not accidental.
That’s environmental design doing its job.
Where Growth Actually Happens
Here’s the part most people miss.
The real magic doesn’t happen during the class.
It happens after.
Later that day, or the next morning, you catch yourself thinking:
I didn’t realize how tense I was.I handled that conversation differently.I feel… lighter.
That’s what we call experiential awareness.
Your brain is replaying the experience and making sense of it.
And that awareness becomes the thing that changes your future choices.
Growth Isn’t Linear
We like to think growth looks like a straight line.
Do the right things → get better → stay better.
But that’s not how it works.
Growth is cyclical.
You walk into a space carrying something.
Stress.
Ego.
Fatigue.
Distraction.
That’s the miasma.
Then something shifts the environment.
You move.
You breathe.
You connect.
That clears the air.
Then comes the awareness.
You notice what changed.
You understand something new.
And then…you go back out into the world.
Where, eventually, more miasma builds.
And the cycle begins again.
The Real Skill
The goal isn’t to eliminate emotional miasma forever.
That’s not realistic.
The goal is to get better at recognizing it…
and knowing how to clear it.
To understand:
when it’s in the room
when it’s in your body
when it’s coming from you
Because sometimes the heaviness you feel isn’t the environment.
It’s something you brought with you.
The MoveMaker Takeaway
Growth doesn’t happen because you finally figured everything out.
It happens because you keep stepping into environments that help you:
→notice
→shift
→learn
Over and over again.
Because growth isn’t a straight line.
It’s a cycle.
And sometimes the most important thing you can do…
is clear the air and start again.
